History of Taekwondo Taekwondo Today FAQ

Taekwondo literally means 'the Art of foot and hand', and therefore represents the method of unarmed combat for self defense, involving the skilled used of both the arms and legs for punches, kicks and blocks to protect oneself and neutralize an opponent.

To the people of Korea, Taekwondo is more than a mere hobby or sport.  It implies a whole way of life, rich in tradition and philosophy.  It instills the spirit of strict self-discipline and an ideal of strong moral values.

You do not need to be super-fit to begin training in Taekwondo.  If you are in reasonably good health you will be pleasantly surprised at just how quickly your fitness improves and adapts to the progressively harder demands placed upon you as you progress through the ranks from white belt to Black Belt and beyond.  If you are looking to improve your health by losing unwanted pounds, decreasing your blood pressure and increasing your energy level then Taekwondo training is one of the best ways to achieve these goals.

The combination of the aerobic warm-ups, stretching and basic training make Taekwondo an excellent path to total fitness.  For a beginner taking their first steps on the path of Taekwondo, training can seem rather daunting. There is a seemingly endless road to achieve the coveted Black belt and it is not surprising that most beginners think, "I'll never be able to do that!". As each student progresses in their training they tend to find that their confidence in their own ability grows and this expands into other areas of their lives. Many people have commented on a general improvement in their outlook and success in their everyday life since they started training in Taekwondo. Parents have often reported that their children are making significant improvements in their schoolwork since they started training.

In these days of violence and intimidation, which seem to plague our modern society, Taekwondo enables the weak to possess a fine weapon to defend themselves and defeat the opponent, as well. When wrongly
applied it can be a lethal weapon. There are no short-cuts, no six-week miracle methods to achieve that
ability, but training in Taekwondo will help you gain the 'edge' that you need to avoid a confrontation.  However, if you can not avoid a confrontation or are not allowed to then you will have learned the skills necessary to defend yourself.

Taekwondo is one of the most dynamic combat sports there is.  For those who want to compete there are regular competitions throughout the year at the local, national and international level.  Competition is obviously not for everyone, and we firmly believe that it is up to the individual whether or not he or she wants to enter.  Those who do will, of course, get all the help and encouragement they need, but likewise students who do not wish to compete will not be expected to do so.
